Planning a custom media wall in the DC area? Learn typical price ranges from $3,500 to $15,000+, what affects the final cost, and how fireplaces, cabinetry, lighting, materials, and wall size change the budget.

      <turbo:content>

How Much Does a Custom Media Wall Cost in the DC Area?

If you’re planning a custom media wall in Washington DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland, one of the first questions is usually: How much will it cost?

For most custom projects in the DC area, a realistic starting range is approximately $3,500 to $15,000+. The final price depends less on the TV itself and more on what is being built around it — cabinetry, fireplace integration, materials, shelving, lighting, wall size, and overall complexity.

Below is a practical way to understand the main price levels before requesting an estimate.

Simple Media Walls: $3,500–$6,000+

A simpler media wall is usually focused on creating a clean architectural feature around the TV without extensive cabinetry.

Typical elements may include:

TV mounting area

framed or built-out center section

concealed wiring

decorative trim or wall panels

wood slats or painted finishes

simple LED lighting

floating shelf or cabinet

This type of project works well when the main goal is to make the TV wall look intentional rather than add a large amount of storage.

You can see different layouts and configurations on our Custom Media Walls page.

Media Walls with Fireplace: $6,000–$10,000+

Adding an electric fireplace changes both the design and construction of the wall.

A typical fireplace media wall may combine:

TV

linear electric fireplace

custom bump-out

mantel

stone, porcelain, wood, or painted finishes

concealed wiring

integrated lighting

Fireplace size, finish materials, wall height, and the relationship between the TV and fireplace all affect the final price.

If the fireplace is intended to become the main architectural feature of the room, it may make more sense to plan the project as a complete Fireplace Feature Wall rather than simply adding a fireplace below the TV.

Media Walls with Cabinets & Shelving: $8,000–$15,000+

Once custom cabinetry and shelving are added, the project becomes a complete entertainment wall rather than just a TV feature.

These projects often include:

lower cabinets

floating or built-in shelves

LED shelf lighting

media equipment storage

drawers

decorative display areas

TV integration

optional fireplace

coordinated materials and finishes

Cabinetry is often one of the biggest factors affecting the total budget because the amount of construction, finishing, hardware, and installation increases significantly.

For storage-focused designs, see our Built-In Cabinets & Shelving page.

Large Custom Media Walls: $15,000+

Large walls, high ceilings, extensive cabinetry, premium materials, or more architectural designs can push the project above $15,000.

Examples include:

floor-to-ceiling media walls

double-height rooms

large built-in entertainment centers

extensive cabinets and shelving

stone or large-format porcelain

complex lighting

multiple material combinations

architectural panels

custom niches and display areas

At this level, the wall is usually being designed as one of the main architectural features of the room.

You can browse different scales and configurations in our Completed Projects.

What Affects the Cost of a Media Wall?

Two media walls that look similar in a photograph can have very different construction costs.

Wall Size

A 9-foot-wide wall with an 8-foot ceiling is very different from a 16-foot wall or a two-story living room. Larger walls require more framing, more finish material, and more labor.

Cabinetry

Adding drawers, doors, shelving, and custom storage can significantly increase both materials and labor.

Fireplace

Electric fireplaces require additional framing, finishing, and coordination with electrical work.

Materials

Painted MDF, wood slats, white oak, stone veneer, porcelain, limewash, and other finishes all have different material and installation costs.

Lighting

LED shelves, backlighting, niches, and other integrated lighting require additional planning and construction.

Existing Conditions

Outlets, wiring, vents, baseboards, wall construction, ceiling height, and other site conditions may affect the final scope.

For a broader comparison of project levels and typical budgets, visit our Pricing Guide.

Can a Media Wall Be Designed Around a Budget?

Yes — and this is often the most practical way to approach the project.

For example, an inspiration photo may include a fireplace, full cabinetry, stone, lighting, and multiple shelves, while the available budget is closer to $5,000. That does not necessarily mean the project has to be abandoned.

Instead, the design can be simplified.

Possible adjustments include:

reducing the amount of cabinetry

using a floating cabinet instead of full built-ins

simplifying the finish

reducing the number of illuminated shelves

creating a smaller architectural center section

postponing some upgrades for a later phase

The goal is to keep the main design idea while adjusting the scope to a realistic budget.

How to Get a More Accurate Media Wall Estimate

You do not need a finished design before contacting us.

For a preliminary estimate, send:

a clear photo of the wall

approximate wall width

ceiling height

TV size

fireplace size, if applicable

inspiration images

ZIP code

approximate project budget

From this information, we can usually determine whether the concept is realistic for the space and provide an initial price range.

If the direction makes sense, the next step is a more detailed consultation and project planning.

Planning a media wall in Washington DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland?

Request a Free Estimate and send us your wall photos, dimensions, and inspiration.
</turbo:content>

Compare five major accent wall styles — Board & Batten, shiplap, wood slats, decorative panels, and specialty plaster finishes — and learn which option may work best for your room.

      <turbo:content>

5 Types of Accent Walls: Which One Is Right for Your Home?

An accent wall does not have to mean simply painting one wall a different color. Today, a feature wall can add architecture, texture, natural materials, or a completely different surface to a room.

For homeowners in Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland, we typically divide custom accent walls into five main categories: Board & Batten, Shiplap, Wood Slat Walls, Decorative Wall Panels, and Decorative Plaster & Specialty Finishes.

Each creates a very different look — and each comes with a different level of construction, material cost, and maintenance.

If you’re considering a feature wall for your home, our Custom Accent Walls page shows additional design possibilities.

1. Board & Batten Accent Walls

Board & Batten is one of the most versatile ways to add architectural detail without introducing a completely different material.

The wall is divided using vertical, horizontal, or geometric trim elements and then typically painted as one continuous surface. Traditional versions use evenly spaced vertical battens, while modern designs may use larger rectangular sections, asymmetrical layouts, or full-height patterns. Board-and-batten treatments are commonly used to add texture and architectural character to otherwise flat walls.

It works especially well in:

bedrooms

dining rooms

entryways

living rooms

stairways

home offices

One of its biggest advantages is flexibility. A soft white or greige wall can feel traditional and understated, while dark navy, olive, charcoal, or burgundy can make the same trim layout much more dramatic.

For many homes, Board & Batten is a good choice when you want the wall to feel architectural rather than material-heavy.

2. Shiplap Accent Walls

Shiplap creates a feature wall using a repeated horizontal or vertical plank pattern. It has long been associated with farmhouse and coastal interiors, but cleaner profiles and different paint colors allow it to work in much more contemporary spaces as well.

Traditional white horizontal shiplap creates a lighter, more relaxed look. Vertical shiplap can visually emphasize ceiling height and often feels a little more modern.

Common applications include:

fireplace walls

bedrooms

living rooms

entryways

dining spaces

TV walls

Shiplap can also work particularly well when incorporated into a larger Fireplace Feature Wall.

The final appearance depends heavily on plank width, orientation, paint color, surrounding trim, and how the wall connects to baseboards, ceilings, windows, and other architectural elements.

3. Wood Slat Accent Walls

Wood slat walls are one of the most recognizable contemporary accent wall styles.

Vertical wood strips create rhythm, depth, and natural warmth while still keeping the overall wall relatively clean. Depending on the design, the slats may cover the entire wall or only one section.

Popular finishes include:

white oak

walnut

medium natural wood tones

dark stained wood

painted slats

acoustic-style slat panels

Slats can be especially effective behind a TV, around a media feature, in an entryway, or as a decorative backdrop in a home office.

They can also be combined with lighting, floating cabinetry, or other materials. For example, a Custom Media Wall might combine a painted TV panel with wood slats on one or both sides.

Compared with painted molding, wood slats generally introduce more natural material into the room, so they tend to become a stronger visual feature.

4. Decorative Wall Panels

Decorative panels are one of the broadest accent wall categories because the wall surface itself can imitate or introduce many different materials.

Depending on the project, panels may include:

PVC decorative panels

marble-look panels

stone-look panels

fluted panels

textured 3D panels

wood-look panels

large-format decorative sheets

architectural wall panels

This type of wall is useful when you want a stronger surface effect without necessarily building a traditional stone or wood wall.

For example, large marble-look or stone-look panels can create a dramatic backdrop behind a TV or fireplace, while fluted or dimensional panels work well in bedrooms, offices, dining rooms, and entryways.

Decorative panels are also useful when the design calls for a surface that is easy to clean or when a particular visual effect would be difficult or expensive to achieve with the natural material itself.

The important part is choosing a panel that works with the scale of the room. A very active stone or marble pattern can easily dominate a smaller space, while a subtle textured panel may add just enough depth.

5. Decorative Plaster & Specialty Wall Finishes

Not every accent wall needs trim, wood, or panels.

Decorative plaster and specialty coatings can turn the wall itself into the feature.

This category can include finishes such as:

Venetian plaster

limewash

silk-effect decorative coatings

pearlescent finishes

concrete-look finishes

marble-effect plaster

textured mineral coatings

layered decorative finishes

Instead of creating a repeated architectural pattern, these treatments rely on depth, movement, sheen, and hand-applied texture.

Some finishes are very subtle and change appearance depending on natural light. Others can reproduce the movement of stone, polished marble, aged plaster, or soft fabric-like surfaces.

These walls work particularly well in spaces where you want something more refined than a standard painted wall but do not want obvious molding or panel joints.

They are often used in:

living rooms

bedrooms

dining rooms

entryways

home offices

fireplace surroundings

Because many decorative finishes are applied by hand, the final surface has a more individual character than a factory-made panel.

Which Accent Wall Type Should You Choose?

There is no single accent wall style that works for every room.

A useful way to think about the five categories is:

Board & Batten — architectural and painted

Shiplap — clean plank texture

Wood Slats — warm and contemporary

Decorative Panels — strong material or surface effect

Decorative Plaster — subtle texture and handcrafted finish

The choice should depend on the architecture of the home, room size, furniture, lighting, desired maintenance, and overall budget.

You can see examples of different wall treatments in our Projects, or review typical project ranges on our Pricing page.

If you already have a wall in mind, send us a photo, approximate dimensions, and a few inspiration images.
A plain kitchen island in Hanover, MD was transformed with a custom geometric trim pattern, detailed finish preparation, and a fresh painted finish — creating a more architectural look without replacing the existing cabinetry or countertop.

In this Hanover, MD project, the goal was simple: take a plain island base and turn it into a more intentional architectural feature.

The existing island had a flat, dark surface with very little visual detail. Instead of replacing the cabinetry or countertop, we focused only on the exterior face of the island.

What We Did

We created a custom geometric trim pattern directly on the island surface. The layout was designed to add movement and visual interest without making the kitchen feel overly decorative.

The work included:

planning the trim layout

cutting and installing the decorative molding

filling and preparing all joints

sanding and surface preparation

finish work around the trim

painting the completed island face

The result is a subtle architectural accent that changes the appearance of the island while keeping the existing kitchen layout and countertop intact.

This is a good example of how a relatively focused custom accent wall project can be adapted to smaller architectural surfaces — not only full walls.

A Small Feature That Changes the Room

Before the project, the back of the island read as one large flat surface. After adding the geometric trim pattern and completing the finish work, the island became a decorative element of the kitchen.

The new design works especially well because the trim is painted in one continuous color. Instead of looking like applied decoration, it feels integrated into the island itself.

Similar trim techniques can also be used on:

dining room walls

bedroom feature walls

entryways

stair walls

home offices

bar fronts

kitchen islands and peninsulas

For homeowners comparing different decorative wall treatments, our Accent Walls page includes additional ideas using molding, wood slats, shiplap, decorative panels, and specialty finishes.

Designed Around the Existing Kitchen

One of the advantages of this type of project is that the existing cabinetry and countertop can remain in place.

Rather than turning the project into a larger kitchen renovation, we worked with the existing island and concentrated on the visible surface. That keeps the scope focused while still creating a noticeable visual improvement.

The same approach is often useful when a homeowner wants to upgrade one part of a room without rebuilding everything around it.

You can see other examples of completed custom work on our Projects page.

Planning a Decorative Wall or Trim Project?

Project cost depends on the size of the surface, trim pattern, amount of preparation, finish work, and painting required. The effect becomes especially noticeable under directional lighting, where different areas of the surface reflect light differently.

Silk-effect finishes work well when the goal is to create a refined wall without obvious panel joints, molding, or heavy architectural details.

Marble-Look Decorative Finish

Another wall was finished with a hand-applied marble-inspired coating.

Rather than installing large stone or porcelain panels, the decorative material was layered and worked directly on the wall to create subtle veining and natural movement.

The result is more individual than a printed panel because the pattern is created manually and can be adjusted during application.

Stone & Textured Finishes

The project also included more textured surfaces with a mineral or stone-like appearance.

These coatings rely on differences in tone, texture, and application technique to create depth. Depending on the material and finishing method, the wall can feel softer and more natural or much more dramatic.

Silver Silk Finish

Another finish used a cooler silver-toned silk effect.

This type of decorative coating changes significantly with lighting. Under direct light, parts of the surface become brighter and more reflective, while other areas remain soft and muted.

It is a good example of why specialty finishes are difficult to judge from a small sample alone — the appearance depends heavily on wall size, lighting direction, and the surrounding interior.

Decorative Finishes Beyond Standard Paint

Decorative plaster and specialty wall coatings have been used extensively in European interiors for many years, while in the United States they are still a more specialized category and continue to gain interest.

This is also an area where experience matters. These materials are not applied like ordinary wall paint. The final result depends on surface preparation, layering, application technique, timing, and the way the material is finished by hand.

Our team has significant experience working with these types of specialty decorative finishes and is one of the companies in the region actively offering this type of work.

You can explore additional wall treatments on our Custom Accent Walls page, including trim, shiplap, wood slats, decorative panels, and specialty finishes.

For examples of other completed work, visit our Projects page.

Where Can Decorative Finishes Be Used?

Specialty coatings can work especially well on:

living room feature walls

stairways

dining rooms

bedrooms

entryways

fireplace walls

high-ceiling spaces

home offices

They can also be combined with other architectural elements such as built-ins, lighting, trim, or fireplace features.

For homeowners comparing different project levels and finishes, our Pricing page provides general budget guidance.

If you are considering a silk-effect, marble-look, stone-look, Venetian plaster, or another specialty wall finish, send us photos of the space, approximate dimensions, inspiration images, and your ZIP code.

Request a Free Estimate
</turbo:content>
